Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri has revealed he is using the disappointment of last season’s title collapse as motivation heading into the 2026 Formula 1 opener at Melbourne’s Albert Park with McLaren.

Piastri appeared poised to become Australia’s first F1 world champion since 1980 when he left the Dutch Grand Prix with a 34-point lead over team-mate Lando Norris after securing his seventh victory of the campaign. However, across the final nine rounds, he failed to claim another win and added just three podiums, ultimately being overtaken in the standings by eventual champion Norris and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

The abrupt reversal marked a painful conclusion to a season that had promised a historic breakthrough. Piastri admitted the off-season was defined by reflection, with the emotional setback serving as fuel rather than discouragement ahead of F1’s new regulatory era.

“Obviously, I’m not here just to be known as a nice person or someone who goes about things in a way that people think is good. I’m here to try and become an F1 world champion,” Piastri stated.

“There are a lot of lessons from last year, and yes, the ending was a bit painful. You can either let it bring you down, or it can give you more confidence and motivation for the future.”

The 2026 season introduces sweeping technical changes, including a 50-50 split between combustion and electrical power and the full adoption of sustainable fuels. Piastri believes the reset provides a constructive avenue to channel the motivation gained over the winter.

Melbourne also carries unfinished business. During last year’s Australian Grand Prix, Piastri was locked in a battle with Norris in wet conditions when both drivers ran wide at the same section of track. Norris recovered, while Piastri slid onto the grass and nearly beached his car, eventually finishing ninth — a result that later proved costly in the championship equation.

“Hopefully it goes a bit better than last year,” he added with a smile.

With home support expected to be stronger than ever and the competitive order yet to be firmly established under the new regulations, the Albert Park weekend will offer an early indicator of whether Piastri can convert past frustration into renewed championship momentum in 2026.
