Miguel Oliveira has provided technical insight into the updated fairing introduced by BMW during the Hungary WorldSBK round at Balaton Park, highlighting its intended role in improving mid-corner performance.
The revised fairing features two rear-mounted strakes designed to direct airflow rearwards and downwards. While visually appearing to channel air toward the rear tyre, the primary objective is to enhance aerodynamic load distribution when the bike is at lean, contributing to greater stability and grip through corner phases.
Oliveira suggested that the concept shares similarities with the downwash duct solutions seen in MotoGP since 2021, including their application on the Ducati Panigale V4 R in WorldSBK. This indicates a broader trend of transferring aerodynamic philosophies between premier motorcycle racing categories.
The Portuguese rider was the only member of the team to run the new fairing during Friday practice, while team-mate Danilo Petrucci continued with the standard configuration. This selective deployment suggests BMW is still in the early evaluation phase of the upgrade.
In terms of performance, Oliveira finished ninth in FP2, placing him among the few non-Ducati riders in the top ten alongside competitors from Bimota. He described the day as effectively split between two phases, with significant improvements achieved after setup adjustments in the afternoon session.
From a technical standpoint, Oliveira identified chicanes as the primary area of weakness, where time loss was most evident. The Balaton Park layout, with multiple rapid direction changes, requires precise control and optimal bike response, areas where the current package has yet to reach full efficiency.
Despite these challenges, Oliveira characterised the overall outcome as positive, noting that the team has clearly identified performance limitations. This provides a structured direction for further setup refinement and development work.
The Hungary round will serve as a key evaluation point for BMW’s new aerodynamic concept, offering initial evidence of whether the fairing upgrade can deliver measurable gains as the 2026 WorldSBK season progresses.
