Boasting a staggering 390 race starts in the WorldSBK championship, Alex Lowes is undeniably one of the most seasoned veterans in the paddock. Out on the racetrack, there is virtually nothing the British rider has not encountered or experienced. Yet, the Bimota factory rider faced a surprising irony in his everyday life outside the circuit—up until recently, he did not even hold a legal motorcycle street license.

The 36-year-old rider officially resolved this peculiar gap in his credentials this year by attending a local driving school right alongside his demanding Superbike racing commitments. Following the successful completion of his official riding tests, Lowes is now fully authorized to navigate public roads on two wheels. Juggling world championship pressure with basic road safety lessons proved to be an unconventional yet amusing chapter in his career.

Reflecting on his time back in a training environment, the veteran racer shared his amusement at transitioning from high-powered racing prototypes to standard learner machinery. The favorable weather conditions during his training sessions certainly added a pleasant touch to what was otherwise a surreal routine for a professional motorcycle athlete.

"Endlich darf ich ein Motorrad fahren, und zwar ganz legal – ich habe den Test bestanden," Lowes said with a grin, explaining how it felt to finally pass the legal testing phase. "Es hat sogar etwas Spaß gemacht. Das Wetter war gut, was wahrscheinlich etwas geholfen hat, aber es war auch eine etwas merkwurdige Erfahrung," he added, noting that despite having some fun under the nice weather, the whole exercise remained a rather strange experience for a man of his background.

One of the most humorous aspects of his time at the training facility was the physical setup of the machine assigned to him. Far removed from the sleek, aerodynamics-focused factory superbikes he handles on race weekends, his training bike came heavily guarded with protective accessories.

"Skurril: Das Fahrschulmotorrad war rundum mit Sturzbugeln ausgestattet," he remarked, highlighting the irony of riding a learner motorcycle entirely decked out in crash bars.

Interestingly, professional racing stars lacking standard road licenses is far from an isolated incident in the motorsport world. Another prominent example in Superbike history is six-time world champion Jonathan Rea, who successfully completed his own motorcycle road test back in 2021 when he was 34 years old. These lighthearted revelations continue to showcase the human side of elite motorsport competitors.
