Ai Ogura is finally back in the MotoGP paddock. After missing the last two rounds, the Japanese rider has travelled to Austria for the Grand Prix at Spielberg, though he still faces one final hurdle: a medical examination on Thursday.
A left thumb injury sustained during a motocross session over the summer break forced him to sit out. Surgery in Spain was the quick fix, but rehabilitation in Barcelona took time. As a result, he had to miss the Aragon and Misano GPs, and now hope flickers again in Austria.
The good news was confirmed by the Trackhouse Racing team in an official statement. In the release, the team said Ogura is eager for the Spielberg weekend. However, he must still pass the mandatory medical check scheduled for Thursday before being allowed to ride the #79 RS-GP26.
“The SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP team is delighted that Ai Ogura – after surgery three weeks ago before Aragon and intensive rehabilitation in Barcelona – is heading to Austria with the aim of continuing his season,” the statement read. “If he passes the mandatory medical check on Thursday with the championship medical staff, he will return to the #79 RS-GP26, ready to work on regaining his rhythm after a month out.”
For Ogura, this is no ordinary comeback. He must prove his physical condition is fully recovered, especially for the Red Bull Ring circuit which demands hand strength and stability under hard braking. If he passes, he will be immediately required to adapt to a bike that has undergone several updates during his absence.
The medical decision will heavily influence Trackhouse's trajectory in this part of the season. Without Ogura, the team lost one of its reliable points scorers. His return in Austria could be a turning point in the constructors' standings and strengthen his position among promising young riders.
