Lando Norris was left to lament what might have been after a virtual safety car (VSC) cost him dearly in the Spanish Grand Prix. The McLaren driver started from pole and led comfortably early on, but a poorly timed VSC allowed rivals Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen to pit, ultimately relegating Norris to third.
Norris had looked in control, leading the first 14 laps with ease. However, an incident involving Lance Stroll triggered a VSC, and Norris was five seconds away from the pit entry when it was deployed. He was forced to stay out, while Antonelli and Verstappen dived into the pits. When Norris eventually pitted, he rejoined fifth, behind Charles Leclerc, Antonelli, Verstappen, and George Russell.
After Mercedes pitted Russell again and Leclerc made a late stop, Norris moved up to third. Despite hounding Verstappen in the closing laps, the tight and twisty Madring circuit made overtaking nearly impossible, and Norris had to settle for third as Antonelli took the win.
Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Norris said: "There was nothing I could do. Congrats to Kimi. Luck was not on our side. I gave it a good fight to try and catch up to Max, but difficult to pass. He didn't make any mistakes... yeah, a tough race. One that got away from us."
He added: "I felt like we deserved it, but that's racing sometimes. We'll take it on the chin and try again next time."
Despite the disappointment, Norris remains optimistic about the rest of the season. "Tough to know what we can achieve. These things don't come easy. I do feel like I'm working hard, getting a lot out of the car. Yesterday was pretty phenomenal to get pole, and I drove a perfect race today, but luck wasn't with me. We'll keep it up; the team is doing an amazing job, and we're working hard. We have to continue to work hard because these guys are doing an amazing job, and it's tough at the top. We'll keep pushing, keep trying. More wins are possible, so we'll keep our heads up and keep pushing."
The Spanish GP result is a setback for Norris in the championship fight, but with McLaren's strong form, he will be eager to bounce back in the next races. The Briton will need to put this disappointment behind him and focus on maximizing his potential in the upcoming rounds.
