Nicolo Bulega crashed during a private MotoGP test at Mugello Circuit. The incident occurred on the second day of testing at Arrabbiata 2 corner, where he suffered a highside that threw him off the bike. As a result, the Italian rider was taken to the nearest hospital for examination.
Bulega is preparing for his MotoGP debut next season with the VR46 team. He has been trusted by Ducati to develop the 850cc machine that will be used from 2027. This opportunity gives him a significant advantage as he can adapt to the bike before the official pre-season test in Valencia. However, the Mugello incident is a minor setback in his preparations.
The crash happened around midday, costing Bulega valuable track time. The highside at Arrabbiata 2—one of Mugello's most challenging corners—was severe enough to require intensive care. After being examined at the hospital, medical staff confirmed there were no fractures or serious injuries. Nevertheless, he suffered bruising on several parts of his body due to the impact.
The hospital later discharged him, but Bulega did not return to the circuit. He chose to end the test session early and focus on recovery. This decision was made to prevent further risk, considering his busy schedule, including a possible appearance at the official MotoGP test at the Red Bull Ring on September 21.
However, Bulega's presence at that test is now in doubt. Ducati plans to field Marc Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer, while Bulega is likely to be absent due to his physical condition. Even so, his role in developing the 850cc bike remains crucial. Ducati heavily relies on feedback from the rider who currently dominates the WorldSBK standings.
In his role as a test rider, Bulega has expressed his admiration for the 850cc bike. He also feels comfortable with the Pirelli tyres, which are the current supplier in WorldSBK, making adaptation easier. This combination makes him a valuable asset for Ducati in welcoming the new MotoGP era.
Bulega's career leap is indeed remarkable. After last racing in Moto2 and Moto3 with Valentino Rossi's team, he now returns to the grand prix stage as a MotoGP rider. The Mugello incident should not dampen his spirit, as a bright future awaits him on track.
