The international dirt track racing community was left in profound shock following the tragic passing of Romano Hummel on October 21, 2026, at the young age of 27. The sudden loss of the celebrated Dutch rider has sent ripples of grief through the paddock, leaving fans, family, and peers struggling to comprehend the heartbreaking news.
Throughout his remarkable career, the Dutch rider established himself as one of the most successful talents in oval racing history. He captured the prestigious Longtrack World Championship crown in 2021, secured the Team World Championship in 2023, and dominated the Grasbahn European Championship consecutively in 2022 and 2023 with breathtaking riding displays across Europe.
His resilience was tested heavily in late September 2024 when a severe crash at the Grand Prix in Vechta forced him to initially announce his retirement due to lingering health concerns. However, true to his fighting spirit, he mounted a stunning comeback once his health improved, returning to the oval to secure his third European title on his home track in Aduard.
Despite his glorious return and a triumphant gold medal win with the Dutch national team in Roden, he had already announced plans to permanently retire at the end of the season due to private matters. His unique riding style—characterized by exceptional machine control without relying on the conventional left-leg balancing technique—will forever remain etched in the memories of motorsport enthusiasts worldwide.
The entire racing community extends its deepest condolences to his children, family, and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Romano.
