Jorge Martin secured pole position for the 2026 Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday (August 15), setting a blistering lap of 1m 27.917s. The Aprilia Racing rider edged out his title rival, Marc Marquez, by a mere 0.015 seconds. This marks Aprilia's first pole at the Austrian circuit this season and provides Martin with a crucial advantage in their tight championship battle.
Both riders are currently tied on points at the top of the standings. Qualifying was dramatic, with Marquez recovering from a crash in the final free practice session to challenge for pole. Pedro Acosta of Red Bull KTM completed the front row, just 0.071 seconds adrift. The top three were separated by less than a tenth of a second, highlighting the intense competition.
The second row features Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia), Ai Ogura (Trackhouse Aprilia), and Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Ducati). Alex Marquez suffered his second crash of the weekend but still managed to qualify sixth. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia and Johann Zarco had to navigate Q1, where they set identical lap times to advance. Bagnaia eventually qualified seventh, with Zarco tenth.
Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) was eighth, followed by Fabio Quartararo (Monster Yamaha) in ninth. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) completed the top twelve, ahead of Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini Ducati) on the GP25. Home hero Toprak Razgatlioglu crashed at the end of qualifying and will start 22nd.
With this result, the 14-lap Sprint race at 3pm local time (2pm UK) promises to be a thriller. Martin and Marquez will lead the field away, with Acosta lurking. The championship fight is heating up, and the Red Bull Ring is set to host another classic duel between Aprilia and Ducati.
