Marc Marquez not only clinched victory at the San Marino GP but also seized the MotoGP 2026 championship lead. At the Misano circuit on Sunday, the Ducati rider delivered a flawless performance, capitalizing on Marco Bezzecchi's crash while leading, then holding off Jorge Martin to finish first.
This win propelled Marquez to the top of the standings with 274 points, tied with Martin. However, Marquez holds the tiebreaker with more wins, giving him the edge. Martin finished fifth after briefly overtaking Marquez for the lead.
“This race is like walking on a knife's edge,” Marquez told DAZN. “When you're running those lap times and rhythms, it's very easy to make a mistake. And true enough, when I saw Bezzecchi crash, I changed my approach. Maybe I relaxed too much, and that gave Jorge a chance to attack. But then I regrouped, calmed down, and gradually found the feeling I had yesterday. In the end, I could control the gap.”
Alex Marquez, Marc's younger brother, also impressed and closed in. “I was surprised to see Alex running low 1m31s and closing in. But at this track, when you're within half a second, you either have to be much faster or overtaking is impossible,” Marquez explained.
Marc also clarified why Alex's name appeared on his pit board instead of the next rider. “Before any speculation, let me explain. Throughout my career, when I have two riders behind and the third, in this case behind Alex, is within less than a second, they show his name. When it's more than a second, they show the gap to the other group for management. I think Alex did a great race. Today, just as we made it difficult for Bezzecchi, I made it difficult for Alex. We scored 37 points here at Misano, a right-hand circuit, so I'm extra happy,” he added.
Dani Pedrosa, working as a DAZN commentator, congratulated Marquez and asked about the moments when he slowed down. “What happened was when I saw Bezzecchi crash, I relaxed. At this track with so much grip, when you relax and don't push the bike, it doesn't turn, doesn't push the front, and that's what happened. I was surprised by Jorge's attack, but I didn't stress, I knew there was a long race ahead. I decided to find the feeling again, even though it seemed like it would slip away,” Marquez concluded.
With this result, Marquez sent a clear message to his rivals: mentally, being the leader and the hunted is far better than being the hunter. Now he's in an advantageous position, and the pressure shifts to Martin and the others.
