Marc Marquez is set to return to MotoGP action at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Mugello after missing the previous two rounds through injury. The confirmation was announced via social media on Monday (May 26), although the Ducati Lenovo Team rider must still pass an official medical examination on Thursday before being cleared to compete.

Marquez's comeback comes as a significant boost for Ducati ahead of its home race. The reigning world champion has been sidelined since crashing during the French Grand Prix Sprint at Le Mans on May 8, an accident that resulted in fractures to his right foot.

The injury required surgery shortly after the incident. In addition, Marquez also underwent a separate procedure to remove a loose screw from his right shoulder, which had been compressing a nerve and affecting his comfort while riding the Ducati Desmosedici GP.

As a result of the surgeries, the Spanish rider missed both the Catalan Grand Prix and the official post-race test in Barcelona. His absence represented a significant setback for Ducati, which lost one of its key development references during a crucial stage of the season.

From a championship perspective, the consequences have also been substantial. Heading into Mugello, Marquez now trails championship leader Marco Bezzecchi by 85 points after the Italian secured fourth place in Catalunya. The deficit places additional pressure on Marquez as he begins his comeback.

Despite his absence, Ducati received a morale boost in Catalunya when Francesco Bagnaia ended the factory team's podium drought. The Italian inherited a podium finish after Joan Mir was penalised for a tyre-pressure infringement following the race.

Bagnaia remains the last rider to deliver a grand prix victory for Ducati Lenovo Team, dating back to last season's Japanese Grand Prix. However, before his injury, Marquez had already demonstrated his competitiveness by claiming two Sprint victories during the opening phase of the 2026 campaign.

His return also ensures Ducati will field both factory riders at one of the most important races on its calendar. Mugello holds enormous historical and commercial significance for the Italian manufacturer, making a full-strength factory presence particularly important.

Technically, Marquez's biggest challenge will not only be his physical condition but also regaining race rhythm after several weeks away from competitive MotoGP machinery. Mugello's high-speed layout, aggressive direction changes and exceptionally long main straight place considerable demands on both rider fitness and confidence.

Ducati arrives at its home event carrying positive momentum following the victory of Fabio Di Giannantonio and the VR46 Racing Team in Catalunya. That result reinforced the competitiveness of the Desmosedici package heading into one of the most important weekends of the season.

If he successfully passes Thursday's medical assessment, Mugello will mark the beginning of Marquez's attempt to revive his championship campaign. With an 85-point deficit already established, every result from this point forward could prove decisive in determining whether he can successfully defend his MotoGP world title.
