Marc Marquez ended Friday at the Aragon GP in third place, but the Ducati rider was quick to stress there's still work to do if he wants to fight for pole and victory. Speaking from the MotorLand paddock, Marquez felt comfortable from the start, yet refused to be labeled the favorite despite his stellar record on anti-clockwise circuits.
“It was a good Friday. I went out and felt good, comfortable, just as I expected in Aragon. But it's also true that everything is very tight. Three riders went under the lap record, and I was third. We have to keep working to try and fight for that win, that pole, and get the most out of it. It won't be easy,” Marquez said.
Asked whether the Silverstone disappointment still lingers, Marquez preferred to take it race by race. “Every weekend is different. On a track where things come a bit easier, it demands less of you and helps. It's hard to understand sometimes that when you're playing well, you get tired less. When you're defending, playing badly and passes aren't working, you get twice as tired. Same with bikes. On a track that suits you, you tire less,” he explained.
Regarding his dominance on left-hand circuits—36 wins against Casey Stoner's 16—Marquez called it innate. “It's innate. I've worked on turning things around, making right-handers better and left-handers worse, and I'd sign that right now because there are many more right-hand circuits on the calendar. It doesn't mean I can't turn right; it's just that we're more on par with ourselves, and on left-handers we make the difference a bit more, and it comes easier. I've tried to work and analyze throughout my career how to do better on right-handers, copying what I do on left-handers, but it's innate. It comes naturally,” he said.
He also tipped his hat to Marco Bezzecchi for his strong showing despite injury. “He already had a great weekend at Silverstone. Two weeks have passed, and you can see Bezzecchi has had some big crashes this season, but he doesn't flinch. He's simply a brave, fast rider, and he'll keep being fast as the season goes,” Marquez praised.
On strategy, Marquez admitted everyone pushed to get into Q2, but he chose to play it safe. “Everyone pushed equally to get into Q2, to qualify, and to prepare the race. Today showed it's going to be tight all weekend. That's what happens when several riders are fighting for the championship,” he concluded.
