Lewis Hamilton and fellow Formula 1 drivers face a unique challenge at the Madrid circuit with the banked La Monumental corner, which Pirelli describes as the toughest corner for tyres. Turn 12, with its 13.5-degree banking (about 24% incline), is a major talking point ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix.
Pirelli explains that La Monumental imposes a continuous load unlike any other corner. "The peak vertical energy is not higher than other corners like in Qatar or Zandvoort's banking, but the issue is the duration of the load. Here you are under load for 5.5 seconds, double the duty cycle," said Pirelli's chief engineer Simone Berra. This puts tyres under sustained pressure, testing durability and performance.
However, there is no excessive concern so far. Berra confirmed that data from simulations matches real-world conditions after checking several teams. "We are still checking all loads and data from three or four teams, and so far it's in line with expectations," he said. Pirelli does not plan to impose stint limits as done in Qatar, as the risk is manageable.
Beyond safety, another technical question arises: can the banked corner be taken flat out? Drivers have found that there is lap time to gain by judging the throttle correctly. This presents a challenge for drivers to balance speed and stability.
Strategically, the characteristics of La Monumental could influence tyre strategy and car setup. Teams must consider potentially higher tyre degradation due to the continuous load. Pirelli continues its analysis by cutting tyres from practice sessions to ensure safety. Meanwhile, drivers like Hamilton must quickly adapt to the new circuit.
The impact on the championship could be significant if a team manages to maximize performance at this corner. The new Madrid circuit adds a new variable to the season's competition. Teams like Ferrari and Mercedes will certainly want to exploit every opportunity for an advantage.
