Liam Lawson revealed that power unit and energy management problems were the main causes of his performance decline during the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Racing Bulls driver started ninth and climbed as high as sixth on the opening lap. However, his pace continued to fade before he eventually finished 12th and saw his run of successive points finishes come to an end.

Lawson explained that Racing Bulls attempted to save energy from the exit of La Source through Eau Rouge and Raidillon. The strategy cost so much speed that rivals were able to pass him without needing to launch planned overtaking moves.

“We were way too slow throughout the race and it became apparent quite quickly. We had some issues with the power unit and were trying to optimise it,” Lawson said.

The New Zealander stated that the Belgian circuit made energy deployment particularly important to lap time. His opening stint was relatively competitive, but the car’s performance deteriorated after the pit stop.

“We were trying to save energy through Eau Rouge towards Turn 5, but we were losing so much time that people were accidentally overtaking me. We had no energy down to Turn 1,” he added.

Lawson was also involved in several contacts during the race and ran off again while fighting at Turn 5 after his pit stop. He suspected the power problem continued to affect the car until the closing stages.

Although Lawson failed to score, Arvid Lindblad finished ninth. That result helped Racing Bulls draw level with Alpine in the battle for fifth place in the constructors’ standings.
