Liam Lawson Faces Mexico F1 Qualifying Disqualification Over MGU-K Technical Breach

Liam Lawson's top-ten starting position for the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix is currently in serious jeopardy after he and his Racing Bulls team were summoned by the stewards over a potential technical infringement.

The driver had originally qualified in a strong eighth position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, though he was slated to start ninth at best due to a one-place grid penalty stemming from an unnecessary practice clash with Max Verstappen—an incident for which Lawson promptly apologized.

However, Lawson may now miss out on a potential points-scoring grid slot altogether after being reported for an alleged breach of F1's complex MGU-K power deployment rules immediately following the conclusion of his final flying lap in Q2.

Technical breaches in Formula 1 are traditionally a straightforward black-and-white matter that almost invariably result in strict disqualification from the session. FIA F1 technical delegate Jo Bauer noted in his official report that both the driver's maximum power demand and the electrical DC power of the MGU-K dropped at greater rates than legally permitted.

In essence, as Lawson crossed the line to end his Q2 run, his car's electric power deployment cut off far too abruptly. While the battery-powered MGU-K provides an immense power boost on top of the internal combustion engine, the sporting regulations strictly mandate that power must fade out gradually rather than shutting down instantly.

Telemetry data and delegate reports highlighted unusual energy deployment drops, echoing complex energy-saving strategies seen across power units supplied by Red Bull Ford Powertrains, while stewards continue to evaluate the final technical outcome alongside teammate Arvid Lindblad's telemetry data.
