Liam Lawson kept his point-scoring result from the 2026 Silverstone Sprint after Formula 1 stewards decided to issue only a warning for his defensive move against Isack Hadjar.

Lawson finished eighth in the British Grand Prix Sprint, but the result was placed under investigation after replays showed him appearing to close the gap into Turn 15 as Hadjar attempted to complete an overtake. Hadjar criticised the move over team radio.

After hearing from both drivers, the stewards concluded that Lawson's move did not reach the threshold for a time penalty. That decision was significant because eighth place is the final points-paying position in the Sprint format.

"The driver of Car 30 stated that, at the relevant time, he was still at full throttle and had not yet commenced braking, and that the movement of the car was part of deceleration and preparation for the corner rather than a movement under braking," the stewards stated.

Hadjar, as the driver of Car 6, said the move by Lawson was sharp, but also accepted that sufficient room was left and that contact was avoided. He also said the incident did not merit a penalty, with the different energy levels of the two cars making the closing speed harder to judge.

"The Stewards accept that this was not a case of a significant change of direction after the braking phase had clearly commenced, and also accept that Car 30 left sufficient room for Car 6 to ensure that no contact occurred," the stewards wrote.

Even so, the stewards considered Lawson's defensive move late and abrupt enough to warrant a formal caution. In regulatory terms, the move was judged to be marginally over the acceptable limit when defending into a corner.

The verdict means Lawson retains his Silverstone Sprint point, while Hadjar gains no change to the result through the investigation. Attention now shifts to how this stewarding standard is applied in future defensive battles, especially when different energy states and high closing speeds are involved.
