A severe blow was dealt to Liam Lawson during the Formula 1 race weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez after he was officially disqualified from the Mexican Grand Prix qualifying session. The Racing Bulls driver had originally secured an impressive eighth place on the grid, just ahead of his team-mate Arvid Lindblad. However, that strong result was completely wiped out following a technical regulation infringement detected during his in-lap in Q2.
Prior to this disqualification, Lawson was already slated to drop one position on the starting grid due to a penalty stemming from an incident with Red Bull star Max Verstappen during Friday's second practice session. That initial sanction would have placed him ninth for Sunday's main race. Unfortunately, subsequent investigations by the race stewards drastically altered the outcome for the Faenza-based outfit.
According to the official stewards' report, the Racing Bulls car driven by Lawson failed to achieve the mandated rate of reduction in MGU-K deployment, known as the step-down procedure, during his Q2 in-lap. After crossing the line to complete his flying lap, he did not immediately lift off the power as required, resulting in maximum power demand and ERS-K electrical DC power dropping at rates exceeding regulatory limits.

The stewards emphasized that this strict rule applies regardless of whether any performance advantage was gained on the track. Based on established precedents, disqualification was strictly required even though the team had self-disclosed the breach. The ruling underscores the zero-tolerance approach toward power unit operational parameters during qualifying sessions.
Racing Bulls issued a formal statement acknowledging the stewards' decision, confirming that the required rate of reduction in MGUK deployment was not achieved on the in-lap during Q2. While reiterating that no competitive advantage was gained, the team accepted that Lawson will now be forced to launch his race day charge from the very back of the starting grid.
