Liam Lawson has suffered a major setback ahead of the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix after being excluded from the qualifying results following a technical infringement. The Racing Bulls driver saw his strong grid position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez stripped away by the FIA stewards.
The Faenza-based squad had shown promising pace on Saturday by successfully guiding both cars into Q3 and emerging as the leading force in the midfield battle. However, that impressive qualifying performance was undone by a post-session technical penalty, forcing the New Zealander into a challenging recovery drive from the back of the grid on race day.
The root cause of the exclusion stemmed from an infraction regarding the MGU-K rampdown rate after the driver completed his fastest flying lap in Q2. According to the official stewards' summons document, the telemetry data revealed that the car was in breach of the minimum power requirements immediately after crossing the control line.

Under Article C5.12.6 of the technical regulations, electrical power must be reduced gradually at a maximum rate of either 50 or 100 kilowatts per second. Because the driver did not lift off the throttle immediately upon finishing his fast lap, the electrical DC power of the ERS-K dropped at a steeper rate than permitted by the strict championship rulebook.
During the subsequent hearing with FIA officials, the team argued that the technical deviation did not yield any lap time advantage on the track. Nevertheless, the stewards maintained that technical regulations are absolute, meaning that a lack of sporting advantage cannot excuse a clear breach of compliance.
