Lewis Hamilton has been confirmed to remain with Ferrari for the 2027 Formula 1 season. Team principal Fred Vasseur delivered the confirmation following the seven-time world champion’s improved performances throughout the 2026 campaign.
Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025 after ending his long and successful period with Mercedes. His first season with the Italian team proved difficult as he adjusted to a different engineering structure, working tools, car characteristics and operational approach.
Vasseur acknowledged that Ferrari initially underestimated the scale of that adaptation process. Hamilton had spent most of his Formula 1 career within one team environment, meaning his transition could not be directly compared with drivers who had moved between organisations more regularly.

“Last year I underestimated the scale of the transition from Mercedes to Ferrari. Everything was new to him, and Lewis isn’t one of those drivers who changes teams every two or three years, like Carlos Sainz,” Vasseur told Corriere della Sera.
The situation changed in 2026 as Hamilton developed a stronger understanding of Ferrari’s technical tools, personnel and working methods. Improved results, including several podiums and a breakthrough performance in Barcelona, helped create momentum and strengthened the level of trust between driver and team.
“Now he knows the tools, the people and our approach. With these good results, he has entered a virtuous circle,” Vasseur said.
That progress led to questions over Hamilton’s contractual position for 2027. When asked to confirm whether the British driver would remain in Ferrari colours next season, Vasseur delivered a brief and definitive response: “Yes.”
Hamilton has also improved relative to team-mate Charles Leclerc after struggling to match the Monegasque driver during his debut campaign. Hamilton’s input into the construction and development of the 2026 car has assisted his adaptation, particularly in areas connected to braking preference and front-end behaviour.
Vasseur nevertheless rejected the suggestion that the SF-26 had been designed specifically around Hamilton’s driving style. He explained that Ferrari develops its car around overall performance requirements, while feedback from both drivers influences only selected details and development directions.
“Not at all. We don’t tailor Formula 1 cars to one driver or another. The cars might be developed based on the drivers’ feedback, but we are talking about marginal differences,” Vasseur said.
The confirmation removes one of the principal questions surrounding Ferrari’s 2027 line-up. Hamilton can now continue building momentum without contractual uncertainty, while Ferrari must convert its early progress into consistent performance and results capable of strengthening the team’s position in the championship fight.
