Lando Norris Leads 2026 Hungarian F1 GP After Oscar Piastri Incident

Lando Norris took the lead of the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix after a longer strategy and an incident involving Oscar Piastri reshaped the contest between the two McLaren drivers.

Piastri claimed the lead at the start ahead of Norris, while Charles Leclerc lost several positions after beginning the race from the front row. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton followed the two McLarens in the leading battle.

Hamilton became the first leading contender to stop on lap 14, switching from soft to hard tyres. Verstappen responded one lap later, but Ferrari initially brought Hamilton back onto the circuit ahead of the Red Bull through the pit-stop sequence.

Verstappen immediately reclaimed the position with a late-braking move into Turn 1 on lap 16. Piastri and Leclerc stopped on lap 17, while Norris extended his opening stint until lap 18 to create a strategic offset.

After the first round of stops, Piastri and Norris closed back together at the front. Norris briefly ran wide at Turn 4 but quickly recovered the lost time and began pressuring his team-mate as Piastri reported tyre concerns.

Piastri made his second stop on lap 34, while Norris remained on track to build a tyre offset. The approach gave Norris the opportunity to use fresher tyres later in the race and attempt to gain the position through an overcut.

The decisive moment arrived on lap 39 when Piastri made contact with Carlos Sainz while attempting to lap the Williams driver. Piastri lost crucial time, while the stewards later issued Sainz a five-second penalty for causing the collision.

Norris stopped on the following lap and returned to the circuit ahead of Piastri, claiming the net lead after McLaren’s extended strategy benefited from the time his team-mate had lost. Piastri expressed his frustration over the radio following the incident.

Norris then passed Kimi Antonelli on lap 46 to take the lead on track. Antonelli had not yet completed his two-stop strategy before returning to the pits on lap 54 for a fresh set of hard tyres.

Behind them, Verstappen made his second stop on lap 42 and returned with a tyre advantage. Hamilton had completed his second stop earlier on lap 31, also fitting hard tyres for the final stint.

The race also featured technical problems for Cadillac. Valtteri Bottas suffered a front-brake fire, while Sergio Perez reported a suspension component moving before replays confirmed a failure at the front left.

With 16 laps remaining, Norris held a strong position to convert pole into victory, although Piastri retained an opportunity to respond through the tyre difference. The strategies of Antonelli, Verstappen and Hamilton could also reshape the leading order during the closing stages of the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
