Jorge Martin turned a challenging Saturday into a third-place finish in the MotoGP Sprint at Misano. Starting from fifth after a qualifying session disrupted by yellow flags, the Aprilia rider fought his way up and battled in the lead group. Despite acknowledging his rivals' superior pace, Martin is not settling and is ready to go all-out in Sunday's long race.
“I feel good. After yesterday and starting fifth, I knew this wasn't an easy track. I managed to get past some riders, but it's very difficult to fight with Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi. While chasing Di Giannantonio, I cooked the front tyre and then just followed. If we improve the bike a couple of points, I think I can get closer to them,” said Martin, as reported by Motosan.es.
Martin also highlighted the hidden rhythm of Marc Marquez, which he found hard to read during practice. “I was counting a bit more on Pecco winning, especially given his superiority in practice. But Marc manages his pace and only he knows his true speed. It was a very good race and their level is very high,” he added.
Qualifying was compromised by three yellow flags, preventing Martin from setting a clean lap, so fifth was the maximum. For the Sprint, he opted for the medium tyre as the soft was not an option. “We gathered very good information for tomorrow; I hope to get a bit closer to the front and maybe they'll fight among themselves,” he explained.
Regarding Sunday's target, Martin made it clear he won't settle for another third. “I'm not signing for anything, I'm going all out. I think in the long race I can be more competitive and I'll try to improve the bike to be a bit closer. It's a very physical track, the Sprint was already tough and tomorrow's 26 laps I don't even want to imagine. From now on I'll have to manage myself better. Marc and Marco are the favourites, even if they say otherwise, they have an extra step and are ahead right now,” he stated.
The decisive overtake was inspired by last year's move. “With the medium tyre, overtaking was very difficult. I was always close to Vinales but couldn't reach the braking point I wanted. I remembered Marco's overtake last year in the Sprint, so I did the same,” he revealed.
With the Sprint podium as a confidence boost, Martin is optimistic about a stronger performance in the main race. He knows the physical challenge of Misano will be even greater, but his determination to fight at the front remains fierce. If Aprilia can give him a better bike, Martin could well become a serious threat to the favourites.
