The premier class paddock is set for another rider lineup change ahead of this weekend's action as Iker Lecuona prepares to make his return to MotoGP. The Spanish rider has been called up by Gresini Racing to pilot the Ducati machine at Phillip Island, stepping in for a teammate who is still recovering from physical injuries.
The decision comes after the regular team rider was forced to sit out the Australian Grand Prix due to a fractured first metacarpal in his left hand. The injury occurred following a heavy high-speed crash at turn 16 during the previous race weekend at the Mandalika International Circuit, requiring immediate surgical intervention and a strict rehabilitation period.
Speculation regarding his absence intensified over the weekend when he appeared in the paddock wearing a cast on his left arm. Following official confirmation from the squad on Monday morning, management immediately secured the services of their trusted reserve rider to pilot the Ducati entry for the upcoming overseas round.
This opportunity marks the substitute rider's third premier class appearance of the 2026 campaign. He previously impressed by securing a strong seventh-place finish as a stand-in earlier in the year, bringing valuable adaptability and race craft back to the Italian machinery for this crucial weekend.
The stand-in arrives in Australia carrying strong momentum from the WorldSBK finale in Jerez, where consistent podium finishes cemented his status near the top of the production-based championship standings. The team remains optimistic that his recent high-level form will translate smoothly as preparations begin for the final stretch of the season.
