After a challenging first half of the season, Honda is finally bringing new weaponry. The long-awaited engine upgrade will make its debut at the Dutch GP this weekend, and the Japanese manufacturer hopes it will be a turning point for Aston Martin.
Honda's chief F1 engineer, Shintaro Orihara, gave exclusive insight into what has changed with the new engine spec. The focus is clear: improving power performance, which has been their biggest weakness.
"Our biggest weakness point is power performance. So we focused on improving engine performance in the new engine," Orihara said. "We also build up drivability based on combustion characteristics. We learned a lot from this spec engine, so we don't start from point zero."

This move comes after Aston Martin brought a significant upgrade package in Hungary last month, which yielded noticeable lap time gains despite still lingering at the back. Now it's Honda's turn to contribute.
Orihara also stressed the importance of driver feedback in development. With Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll continuously pushing the team, Honda is trying to find a compromise between driver requests and factory development direction.
"It's important to find the compromise point in how we react to drivers' requests or complaints and how we focus our development programme," he explained. "On the factory side, we focus on engine performance, but at track side, we can tune parameters to improve drivability or energy management for the drivers' requests."
With Aston Martin scoring just one point this season—courtesy of Alonso in Monaco—pressure is clearly mounting. However, with this new engine, hopes of fighting in the midfield are reignited. Will Zandvoort witness their resurgence?
