Honda has officially appointed Yoichiro Fukao as its new Large Project Manager for the Formula 1 power unit programme, succeeding Tetsushi Kakuda effective 1 October. The move signals a technical reshuffle at the Japanese manufacturer after a turbulent 2026 season with Aston Martin.
The announcement came shortly after the Spanish Grand Prix, a race that may have been the final trigger for Honda to alter its development direction. Throughout the season, Honda's power unit has been criticised for lacking performance and reliability. Efforts to improve were made, including introducing the SPEC 2 unit from the Dutch GP, but the results have yet to fully convince.
Fukao's promotion is more than a simple rotation. Honda appears to be refreshing its technical approach by transferring know-how from the previous generation to the new one, especially with the 2027 regulations looming that will remove the MGU-H and increase the role of electrical components. Fukao, who joined Honda in 2002, is no stranger to racing. He has worked across various departments in Formula 1 and MotoGP, most recently as Deputy Head of the F1 Project and Head of Software Division. This cross-discipline experience is expected to bring a different perspective to power unit management.
For Aston Martin, this change could be a breath of fresh air. The Silverstone-based team is fighting to break into the top ranks, and Honda's engine performance is a key factor. With new leadership, there is hope for a more aggressive and measured development path. However, the transition also carries risk, as Fukao will need time to adapt to a team under pressure.
Honda is not alone in facing the 2027 regulations. Other manufacturers like Audi and Red Bull Ford are also preparing. The appointment of Fukao shows Honda is serious about remaining competitive, not just surviving. The public will be eager to see what impact he makes, especially in his first few months.
Clearly, this step confirms Honda is not standing still. They have chosen to shift a key figure and invest in Fukao's experience. Is this the start of a revival, or a big gamble? Only time will tell.
