The on-track rivalry between Todd Hazelwood and James Moffat escalated once again in the Trans Am series, with their third contact in as many rounds. This time, the two battled hard for the lead at Turn 11, resulting in a collision that sent Hazelwood off the track.
The race was dramatic as Hazelwood attempted an inside move on Moffat. However, contact was made and the cars bounced off each other several times exiting the corner. Consequently, Hazelwood was forced off the track and had to settle for fourth place, while Moffat went on to take the victory.
After the race, Hazelwood was visibly furious. He was quickly collected from parc ferme by his Supercars endurance partner Brodie Kostecki and Dick Johnson Racing team manager Tom Moore. This meant there was no verbal interaction between Hazelwood and Moffat in the aftermath of the clash.
Speaking to the Supercars broadcast, Hazelwood expressed his frustration. "Just a real ding-dong battle there towards the end in that Trans Am race. Fighting for the lead there and justg I felt it was pretty average driving there by Moffat. [I've] just got absolutely drilled off the track three rounds in a row by him, so pretty disappointing," he said.
In response, Moffat denied any fault for the incident and insisted there was no malice in their clashes. "I felt like I got a bit of a hit in the right rear and from that point on I was just trying not to spin out, really, and the two cars came together," he told Speedcafe. "I think Todd's got a bit of a bee in his bonnet for some reason. Yeah, we've had a couple of run-ins over the last couple of rounds, which has been unfortunate. There's no malice on my end, but he might think differently. I'm not getting too emotional about it or losing any sleep over it."
This incident adds to the intense competition between the two drivers. With contact occurring three times in a row, tensions are rising ahead of the next race. Both have big ambitions for strong results, but the heated rivalry could impact their teams' performances.
Both Hazelwood and Moffat are currently locked in a tight battle in the Trans Am standings. Moffat's win gives him a points advantage, while Hazelwood lost valuable points. The on-track competition is intensifying, and race officials may be keeping a close eye on their future battles.
