Izan Guevara finally returned to the top step of the Moto2 podium after a series of challenging races. At the Red Bull Ring in Austria, the Spanish rider won a fierce duel against his main rival, Manuel Gonzalez, securing his first victory since Le Mans. This win not only extends his momentum but also narrows the gap in the championship standings, making the title chase even more intense.
From the start, the tension was palpable. The first two laps were a spectacular display of overtaking and late-braking maneuvers at turns 1 and 2. Gonzalez, who started from the front, immediately came under pressure. He dropped to eighth place after being overtaken by several riders, including Salac. Meanwhile, Guevara cleverly took control and began building a lead.
By lap two, Guevara was leading ahead of Ortola and Salac. Alonso and Gonzalez, who had fallen back, managed to rejoin the top five. However, Guevara's pace was too strong for the others. He gradually pulled away from Ortola, who began struggling to maintain his rhythm. Salac, running third, finally overtook Ortola on lap 11, opening the way to chase Guevara. Unfortunately, the gap was already too large.
Behind, the battle for the final podium spot intensified. Ortola had to concede his position to Alonso four laps later. Gonzalez also passed Ortola, finishing the race in fourth. Until the chequered flag, the top five remained unchanged: Guevara, Salac, Alonso, Gonzalez, and Ortola. Guevara's victory tightens the standings, with Gonzalez still leading but by less than 40 points over Guevara.
With seven races remaining, including a series of flyaway events outside Europe, the pressure on Gonzalez is mounting. He can no longer relax as Guevara keeps lurking. The 2026 Moto2 season is truly a battle between two Spanish riders who know each other well.
