George Russell claimed his second victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season after defeating Max Verstappen in a tactical 71-lap battle at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line just 1.611 seconds ahead of Verstappen at the Red Bull Ring, while teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli completed the podium in third place.
The race began cleanly despite the Red Bull Ring's recent history of opening-lap incidents. The first laps immediately produced intense battles, with Lewis Hamilton overtaking Charles Leclerc on the opening lap. Antonelli endured a difficult start after running wide at Turns 1 and 3 on multiple occasions before returning a position to avoid further action from the stewards.
Verstappen successfully defended against the two McLarens before quickly moving into contention for second place. His wheel-to-wheel battle with Hamilton became one of the highlights of the opening stint as both drivers exchanged positions over several corners, allowing Russell to build a lead of more than five seconds at the front.

Ferrari became the first front-running team to reshape the strategic picture. The Scuderia called Hamilton and Leclerc into the pits on laps 12 and 13 in anticipation of an aggressive Red Bull strategy. However, the decision ultimately forced Hamilton onto a three-stop race after Red Bull kept Verstappen on a conventional two-stop approach while preserving fresher tyres for the closing stages.
Verstappen made his first pit stop at the end of lap 18 before Russell responded shortly afterwards and comfortably retained the effective race lead. The complexion of the race changed again on lap 24 when Carlos Sainz stopped on the pit straight with a technical issue, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. The interruption proved particularly unfortunate for Antonelli, who had already completed his pit stop moments earlier and therefore missed the opportunity to gain track position under neutralised conditions.
During the middle phase of the race, Verstappen steadily reduced Russell's advantage as the RB22 demonstrated increasingly competitive race pace. Antonelli recovered to third after overtaking Leclerc, while Oscar Piastri and Hamilton also fought through the field after McLaren gained the upper hand over Ferrari during the second stint.
The decisive strategic phase arrived when Russell completed his second pit stop on lap 43. Red Bull extended Verstappen's stint by six additional laps before fitting a fresh set of hard tyres, giving the Dutchman a tyre-life advantage for the final 20 laps despite sacrificing some time to Mercedes' successful undercut.
A second Virtual Safety Car on lap 53, caused by Alex Albon striking the Turn 3 bollard, again worked against Antonelli after he had stopped immediately before the interruption. That sequence effectively left Verstappen as Russell's only realistic challenger during the closing stages.
Over the final laps Verstappen relentlessly reduced the gap, while Antonelli also closed rapidly on the Red Bull from behind. Although a slight threat of rain had been forecast before the race, the weather never became a decisive factor, leaving tyre management and pit-stop execution as the defining elements of the contest.
Russell ultimately controlled the closing stint to secure his second victory of the season and strengthen his position in the Drivers' Championship. Verstappen finished second after falling just short of launching a decisive attack, while Antonelli completed the podium after applying pressure until the final lap. The result also further reinforced Mercedes' advantage in the Constructors' Championship following one of the most strategically demanding races of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
