George Russell Urges Mercedes Reliability Fix

George Russell has stressed that resolving reliability concerns has become the highest priority for Mercedes following a series of technical failures during the opening phase of the Formula 1 season.

The Brackley-based team has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign, securing six victories from the first seven grands prix. However, that strong performance has been overshadowed by reliability issues, raising concerns over Mercedes' ability to sustain its championship challenge.

Russell suffered a terminal failure in Canada, while team-mate Kimi Antonelli retired with a similar problem in Barcelona. The setbacks have highlighted the challenge of balancing outright performance with durability under Formula 1's new technical regulations.

Toto Wolff previously warned that Mercedes would struggle to remain in title contention unless it solves its reliability problems. Russell echoed that assessment, describing the issue as the team's top engineering priority.

"It’s very much a priority for everybody at Mercedes to get on top of."

"It’s often the case at the beginning of a new regulation that you’re pushing the boundaries of performance and it’s difficult to know that balance with regards to reliability."

Despite the recent failures, Russell insisted reliability is not something that affects his approach behind the wheel. Instead, he believes the responsibility lies with the team to continue improving the package while maintaining its competitive edge.

"So it’s not something I’m thinking about at all, to be honest, when I drive. But as a team, it’s the highest priority for Mercedes and all of the other Mercedes customer teams."
