George Russell has detailed the defensive masterclass required to keep Lewis Hamilton at bay and secure a hard-fought third place at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver faced relentless pressure from his seven-time world champion teammate in the closing laps at Zandvoort.
Russell, who started second, was overtaken by Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap, but reclaimed the position after the pit stops. However, with Antonelli on an alternate strategy, Russell was asked to let him through late in the race, leaving him exposed to Hamilton's charge.
“It was tough,” Russell admitted. “Kimi and I had opposite races – I struggled on the medium, he was strong, then I was strong on the hard. But the VSC gave Lewis a free pit stop, and Kimi pitted too. From then on, I knew I'd be under threat, but I managed the tires well in the high-speed corners to be quick in sector three and defend into Turn 1. I'm pleased with that performance.”
The result capped a challenging weekend for Mercedes, who still lead both championships but face increasing pressure from McLaren and Ferrari. Russell acknowledged that the upcoming races will be tough, especially with the team's upgrade asymmetry between him and Antonelli.
“I think the next two or three races will be a challenge for both of us. We might be a bit more competitive at Monza, but Ferrari has an engine upgrade coming, and we don't know. High-degradation tracks like Zandvoort really suit McLaren, especially Lando, who's a specialist in those conditions. They are the team to beat right now,” he added.
Russell currently sits second in the standings with 183 points, level with Hamilton, and 59 points behind leader Antonelli. The title fight is far from over.
