Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell believes the opening phase of the 2026 season will present an “intriguing” competitive dynamic as teams and drivers adapt to the new power unit regulations.
Under the 2026 framework introduced by Formula 1, approximately 50 percent of total power output will come from the expanded electrical component of the hybrid system. This significant shift places far greater emphasis on energy harvesting and deployment, making driving style and race management more influential than in previous eras.
At circuits featuring heavy braking zones, such as Sakhir and Montreal, energy recovery is expected to be more efficient. However, venues like Melbourne and Jeddah — characterised by long straights connected by flowing high-speed corners — may restrict harvesting opportunities. As a result, drivers will need to adapt their approach to avoid energy deficits during key race phases.
Russell explained that while reduced aerodynamic turbulence could improve following performance, the variability in energy usage between cars and drivers may become the decisive factor.
“The biggest difference compared to the previous era is the variability in energy deployment between cars and drivers, depending on driving styles,” Russell said.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver suggested that circuits with extended full-throttle sections could produce particularly complex racing scenarios, where precise deployment strategy determines overtaking opportunities and defensive capability.
With the 2026 regulations representing one of the most substantial technical resets in modern Formula 1 history, the early races are expected to serve as a critical adaptation phase. Teams that optimise energy management most effectively could secure an early advantage before competitive equilibrium emerges later in the season.
