Pierre Gasly broke the paddock's silence with a stunning performance in Italian GP qualifying, snatching pole position from George Russell with a spectacular final lap.
The Alpine driver set the fastest time in Q3, edging out Russell who looked set to claim his fifth pole of the season. This result marks the first pole for the Enstone-based team since the Fernando Alonso era, and the first for a French driver in decades.
Dramatic Final Lap Action
Russell briefly held the top spot after improving his banker lap. However, Gasly emerged as the dark horse with a phenomenal final run, sending the Alpine team into raptures after a difficult period.
Oscar Piastri, meanwhile, threatened the front row but a small mistake at Turn 1 ruined his chance to improve. The Australian is also under investigation for blocking Liam Lawson in Q2, which could result in a grid penalty.
Tight Battle at the Front
Ferrari failed to mount a serious challenge, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton locking out fourth and fifth. Max Verstappen had to settle for sixth, with the top six separated by a mere whisker.
Kimi Antonelli, who qualified seventh, will drop to the back of the grid due to an engine penalty, while Franco Colapinto made it two Alpines in the top eight. Lando Norris endured a disappointing session in ninth after his final lap was disrupted, with Arvid Lindblad rounding out the top ten.
