Scuderia Ferrari's failure to secure pole position during the qualifying session of the 2026 Formula 1 season has once again sparked major questions among racing enthusiasts. The absolute dominance displayed by Charles Leclerc and his teammate throughout the practice sessions seemingly evaporated the moment the competitive pressure mounted. Despite topping multiple practice charts, the Maranello-based squad had to settle for the fourth and fifth grid positions.

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur offered a surprisingly candid yet realistic assessment regarding the disappointing qualifying outcome. According to the French boss, the SF-26 car's potential was clearly sufficient to claim pole position, but minor mistakes in the final moments caused a golden opportunity to slip away. This latest setback extends the team's drought without a pole position stretching back to the previous season.

Detailing the critical incident during qualifying, Vasseur pointed out the exact moment things went awry for his star driver. «We were the fastest in free practice, and Charles drove a good lap in qualifying until the final corners. He was much faster than on the previous attempt, but he made mistakes in the last two corners. It went as it went, we are only half a tenth away from the front row,» Vasseur explained.

Looking ahead to the main race, Vasseur highlighted the team's compromise on top speed along the straights, which could pose a challenge, though he remains confident in their long-run pace and tyre degradation management. «I think this will be a Grand Prix that offers opportunities. We will struggle a bit due to the lack of top speed, but the deciding factor will be tyre wear,» he noted, shifting the immediate focus to the race start and strategy.
