The Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) is gearing up for a major shake-up. Two new teams, Invicta Racing and LN4 Fusion, are expected to join the grid in 2027, signalling a significant expansion for the junior series. The news emerged from the Hockenheim paddock last weekend, where Emanuele Olivieri and R-ace GP secured the drivers' and teams' titles.
Invicta Racing is no stranger to success, having just clinched the Formula 2 championship, while LN4 Fusion is a high-profile project co-founded by Formula 1 star Lando Norris and operated by former Prema team principal Rene Rosin. Their arrival is seen as a major boost for FREC's prestige. Rivals in the paddock have welcomed the move, acknowledging that two such successful operations will only raise the series' competitive bar.
The application deadline for the 2027 season passed on 21 August 2026. Although no official announcement has been made, the signs are strong. With the addition of two teams, FREC is projected to return to a full grid of 12 teams and 36 cars, a number last seen in 2023. Crucially, organisers have confirmed that the existing 10 teams will retain their slots, a wise move to ensure stability and loyalty.
Beyond the teams, the calendar is also set for changes. Promoter ACI Sport is reportedly working tirelessly with the FIA and circuits to put together an ambitious 2027 schedule. The aim is to revert to a 10-round season after this year's reduced eight. Two legendary circuits, Silverstone and Algarve, are tipped to join, while Barcelona is expected to return after being dropped due to finalisation delays this season.
Most tantalisingly, there is a possibility that FREC could support a Formula 1 Grand Prix, potentially at the Hungaroring. That would be a rare occurrence since the Monaco GP last hosted the series in 2023. If realised, it would skyrocket FREC's exposure, offering a bigger stage for young talents. However, the final weekend format is yet to be decided. Indications suggest the series may drop its four reverse-grid races and return to the traditional two-race format, each with its own qualifying session.
Historically, Silverstone hosted Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019, where Oscar Piastri dominated both races. Now, with a spectrum of new teams and circuits, FREC is poised to reach a new level in the European junior single-seater landscape. Of course, everything is still under negotiation and subject to change, but the wind of change is blowing strong.
