MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Francesco Bagnaia, rider for Ducati Corse, has dismissed speculation that his recent performance surge in Japan stemmed from using Franco Morbidelli’s GP24 bike. Speaking ahead of the 2025 Indonesian MotoGP in Mandalika, Bagnaia confirmed the use of older components but denied rumors of a full bike swap.
According to official sources, the rumors surfaced after Bagnaia’s dominant performance at Motegi, where he secured pole position and victories in both races. This marked a stark contrast to his challenging 2025 season, which included a three-year low of 21st in Barcelona qualifying and double DNFs at his home San Marino Grand Prix.
Misano Test Sparks Turnaround
Following the post-race test at Misano, Bagnaia reported “unconventional” changes to his GP25, boosting his confidence on the bike. While specifics remain undisclosed, speculation suggests Ducati incorporated GP24 components, such as the front fork, swingarm, and ride height device, into his setup.
Dorna presenter Jack Appleyard fueled rumors, claiming that Morbidelli’s GP24 from the VR46 Racing Team was moved to Ducati’s garage and fitted with a GP25 engine. “Pecco issued an ultimatum, demanding the GP24 he knows he can perform on,” Appleyard stated. Bagnaia refuted this, saying, “I’m not confirming those claims, but the confidence I felt in Misano came from some past components we tested.”
Struggles in the 2025 Season
The 2025 season has been tough for the two-time world champion. Bagnaia struggled with a lack of front-end confidence on Ducati’s latest prototype, unlike his teammate, Marc Marquez, who has been more consistent. Bagnaia noted that some components used in Japan are also on Marquez’s GP25.
Despite frustration at finding his form late in the season, Bagnaia defended Ducati’s approach. He explained that earlier podiums at Jerez and Aragon reduced the urgency for drastic changes during those tests. “I was angry we only found this form now, when it could have been earlier,” he admitted.
Outlook for Mandalika
With renewed confidence from Japan, Bagnaia is poised to perform strongly at Mandalika. The circuit’s technical demands present both challenges and opportunities for the Italian rider.
