Fortescue Zero has officially taken over Penske's Formula E operations and will enter as a full customer team for the 2026/27 season, running Jaguar powertrains in the upcoming GEN4 era. This move marks a new chapter for the high-performance engineering division formerly known as Williams Advanced Engineering, as it prepares to become the first Australian-owned Formula E team.
For over a decade, Fortescue Zero has been a key technical partner to Formula E, providing battery intelligence and serving as the official Pit Boost provider. Now, they are bringing that expertise from the pit lane to the grid. "We're going to show the world how we can compete on the track as well," said Gus Pichot, CEO of Fortescue Growth and Energy. "This is the next chapter in our motorsport story. We're here to race, to win, and to innovate."
The acquisition was made by taking over Jay Penske's team. Penske welcomed the transition and expressed confidence that Fortescue Zero will build on the foundations he has laid. "Fortescue Zero has a clear ambition for electric technology and motorsport, and we know it will build upon the great foundations we have laid and lead to future success," he said.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the move and highlighted Fortescue Zero's role as an essential technology partner since the championship's inception. "Formula E is pushing electric racing to another level, creating completely new engineering challenges," added Travis Hester, CTO of Electromobility at Fortescue Zero. "That is exactly where we want to be, at the front of the grid, solving difficult problems and finding the next competitive advantage."
By using Jaguar's GEN4 powertrain, Fortescue Zero will compete as a customer team. Jaguar has long been a dominant force in Formula E, and this partnership is expected to accelerate Fortescue Zero's on-track learning. The team will also be the first Australian-owned outfit on the grid, adding to the diversity of the championship.
Fortescue Zero's entry not only enriches the competition but also underscores Formula E's direction towards increasingly advanced technology. With a strong engineering background, the team has the potential to become a serious threat to established teams. The 2026/27 season will be a stage for them to prove their ambitions.
