Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was denied a historic home victory at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix due to a series of critical strategic errors by the Scuderia pit wall. Despite starting on pole alongside teammate Carlos Sainz, Leclerc finished fourth after a catalogue of mistakes dismantled his early lead.

Technically, the collapse began during the transition from wet to dry conditions. Ferrari misjudged the tire crossover window, briefly considering skipping intermediate tires and moving Leclerc directly from full wets to slicks. However, Sergio Perez of Red Bull reacted faster, pitting for intermediates on lap 16 and successfully executing an undercut that stripped Leclerc of the lead.

The situation deteriorated further on lap 21 as a dry line became evident. Ferrari attempted a double-stack for slicks, but a critical communication failure occurred. Leclerc was initially told to box, followed by a panicked "stay out" instruction that arrived too late—the car was already committed to the pit lane. This forced Leclerc to queue behind Sainz, causing him to lose significant time and drop behind Max Verstappen into fourth place.

The impact of these errors was devastating, as the narrow nature of the Monaco circuit makes overtaking nearly impossible. Leclerc's fury was evident over the team radio, where he described the race as a "freaking disaster." The loss of track position meant that regardless of his raw pace, he was unable to reclaim the lead, leaving him to watch the podium celebration from the fourth position.

Analytically, the event highlighted a stark contrast in operational efficiency between Ferrari and Red Bull. While Red Bull demonstrated decisive action during the weather transition, Ferrari suffered from hesitation and poor coordination during the double-stack. This lack of strategic synchronization resulted in a lost victory for the team and a heartbreak for their star driver on home soil.

It took another two years for Leclerc to finally overcome the "Monaco curse." He achieved redemption at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, winning from pole to become the first Monégasque driver to triumph in his home race since Louis Chiron in 1931. This victory finally erased the trauma of the 2022 strategic failure and cemented his legacy at the circuit.
