Fernando Alonso has questioned the development pace of Formula 1's leading teams in 2026 as they continue to introduce significant upgrade packages under the FIA cost cap.
Aston Martin has chosen to wait for one major package, expected either just before or immediately after the summer break. That strategy has left Alonso and Lance Stroll with a largely unchanged car while front-running rivals continue to bring new parts on a regular basis.
"Apparently, there is no money to bring upgrades, unlimited upgrades like the other teams do. Which is surprising to see the FIA upgrade submission page on Friday every race, because maybe they have the money machine in the minus one floor in the factory," said Alonso.

Alonso explained that Aston Martin's approach was agreed in Australia for cost-efficiency reasons. The team decided to wait until a substantial package was worthwhile, rather than repeatedly trialling new parts within the budget cap limits.
Carlos Sainz also admitted that Williams has noticed the same pattern among the leading teams. Although Williams has continued to pursue aerodynamic upgrades, the Grove squad must manage component life before introducing lighter parts.
Sainz believes the situation shows that the advantage enjoyed by the leading teams is not only about money, but also processes, efficiency, working methods and personnel strength. For Aston Martin and Williams, the challenge is not simply having investment, but turning that investment into upgrades that consistently work on track.
