Fendt, CADRA Vice-President, will receive an unforgettable birthday present: his racing debut in the Modified class, piloting Dan Hodgins' T-Bucket Altered at the Desert Nationals in Alice Springs on August 29-30. He will also race his HSV in Super Street on Sunday, as part of the ANDRA Regional Sportsman Series.
The opportunity comes from CADRA President Dan Hodgins and Club Secretary Josie Hodgins, who offered the drive as a 40th birthday gift and recognition of Fendt's dedication to the club. For Fendt, it's a big leap from his usual street car driving.
“I'm incredibly appreciative of the offer from Dan and Josie,” Fendt said. “I've helped Dan over the years with his Funny Car, and we've crewed on other cars together. But I've never really driven anything other than street cars, so it's a pretty cool opportunity and I'm pretty excited about it.”

Fendt won't get his first full pass in the Altered until Friday's Test 'N' Tune before the event, where he will also complete his licensing. He has been preparing as much as possible, including familiarizing himself with the trans brake and delay box—both new to him.
“I've sat in it a few times, walked through the processes with Dan and his son Cody, like how to drive it, start it, do burnouts, and back up,” he explained. “I've never driven a car with a trans brake before, and the delay box is another thing you have to mentally prepare for. We had it on display at Alice Springs Toyota recently, and I drove it on and off the trailer to get used to the trans brake and shifting gears.”
Fendt also plans to compete at the Heavy Hitters event during Red CentreNATS the following weekend, alongside Hodgins, though logistics will be challenging. “It'll be a fun chaos,” he laughed. “Half the fun is the madness of running around like you have your head cut off.”
Fendt's Modified debut marks a significant milestone in his racing career, proving that hard work behind the scenes can lead to the driver's seat.
