Fans Lament Lewis Hamilton’s Latest 2026 Hungarian F1 Setback

Formula 1 fans have reacted to another setback for Lewis Hamilton after a three-place grid penalty cost him a front-row start for the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Hamilton originally qualified second after finishing only 0.012 seconds behind Lando Norris. However, the stewards ruled that the Ferrari driver impeded Oscar Piastri during the closing phase of Q3 and dropped him to fifth.

The incident occurred when Hamilton travelled slowly on the racing line approaching Turn 1. Piastri was beginning his final flying lap and was forced to take avoiding action before abandoning the attempt.

Ferrari acknowledged that Hamilton received the warning about the approaching McLaren too late. Most fan reactions accepted that the incident warranted a penalty, but some argued that Hamilton had suffered another costly outcome during a weekend in which he had shown competitive pace.

“As expected but still disappointing. If he can be top three after lap one, he may still have a chance to win the race,” one fan wrote during a Reddit discussion.

Other reactions described the result as another wasted opportunity. Several supporters argued that Hamilton had limited time to respond after the late radio message, although the responsibility to avoid impeding another driver remained with the car travelling slowly on track.

“Unfortunately, that was a clear penalty and there was nothing Lewis could really have done as it was a miscommunication. Lewis can’t catch a break lately,” another user wrote.

Hamilton’s penalty also reshaped the leading grid positions. Charles Leclerc moved onto the front row alongside Norris, while Oscar Piastri gained a position after losing his final qualifying attempt in the incident.

Piastri was also viewed as a significant loser from the situation because he was unable to exploit McLaren’s pace on his final run. Some reactions therefore described the incident as damaging to both drivers, even though Hamilton received the direct sporting consequence.

Hamilton will now start the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix from fifth at a circuit where overtaking opportunities are limited. His launch, Ferrari’s tyre strategy and the car’s performance in turbulent air will determine whether he can recover into podium contention.
