Colton Herta is on the verge of officially securing his Formula 1 superlicence as he prepares to take over the cockpit for the opening practice session at this weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix. The American driver currently sits on 39 superlicence points following his FP1 appearance last week at the United States Grand Prix, with the magical threshold of 40 points required to finally earn him the right to race in the world championship.
This upcoming outing marks Herta's fifth FP1 appearance of the season with Cadillac, where he is set to step into Valtteri Bottas's MAC-26 as the veteran Finn stands down for his second mandatory rookie-style session of the year. Rumors continue to swirl regarding a potential race seat if the team decides to shake up its driver line-up for future campaigns, with team boss Marcin Budkowski refusing to rule out changes when questioned in Austin.
To achieve the final point needed, Herta will be strictly required to complete 100 kilometers of running during the FP1 session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, translating to 24 laps around the challenging circuit. His accumulation of 39 points stems from consistent simulator and track efforts, including outings in Barcelona, Hungary, and the United States, though a previous technical failure in Italy limited his mileage while filling in for Sergio Perez.

The bulk of Herta's qualification points originate from his stellar 2024 IndyCar campaign, where he finished as runner-up to Alex Palou to secure 30 points toward his tally. This puts to bed the frustrations of 2022 when his anticipated graduation to the premier single-seater category was blocked by the governing body over strict superlicence criteria.
Expressing his readiness for the challenge, Herta emphasized the importance of maximizing every minute on track. Every opportunity to get behind the wheel is viewed as a valuable learning experience to build up Formula 1 knowledge on a brand-new layout and contribute directly to the engineering programs across the entire race weekend.
