The opening practice session of the 2026 Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix delivered high drama at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as Charles Leclerc stormed to the top of the timesheets. The Monegasque driver posted a stellar lap time of 1m 18.128s, finishing comfortably clear of the chasing pack during a frantic start to the crucial race weekend.

The morning session was heavily shaped by the mandatory rookie running regulations, with all ten teams handing over their cars to young talents for the opening hour. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished second fastest, while Mercedes reserve Fred Vesti surprised many by claiming third place in place of George Russell. Lewis Hamilton slotted into fourth, with Ayumu Iwasa rounding out the top five after stepping into Max Verstappen's Red Bull.

Circuit conditions proved notoriously tricky with a dusty, low-grip track surface characteristic of the high-altitude Mexican venue. Several drivers were caught out by the lack of traction, including Antonelli who suffered a massive snap of oversteer that nearly sent his car into the barriers. Cooling management also emerged as a major talking point for engineers up and down the pit lane as they battled the unique atmospheric challenges of Mexico City.

Technical gremlins disrupted running for a handful of competitors early on. Isack Hadjar was forced back into the Red Bull garage after reporting a sudden loss of power over the team radio, prompting an immediate power unit investigation. Audi also endured a difficult opening hour as their rookie contender was called into the pits to address a trapped cooling fan that blocked crucial airflow to the sidepod.

As the session ticked into its final thirty minutes, teams bolted on the soft compound tires to simulate qualifying runs. Despite the heavy presence of rookie drivers learning the ropes, the established front-runners laid down competitive markers ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested weekend of action.
