The opening practice session of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez kicked off with tricky grip levels due to a newly resurfaced track. Charles Leclerc immediately set the benchmark for Ferrari, clocking a blistering 1m18.128s lap to finish 0.659 seconds clear of the rest of the field.

Track evolution was the primary challenge as drivers navigated the slippery asphalt. Lewis Hamilton was the first driver out on track, running special aerodynamic measuring equipment on his Ferrari before eventually setting the fourth-fastest time of the session.

A flood of rookie appearances added intense drama to the morning running. Kimi Antonelli put in a stellar performance to secure second place, while Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti turned heads by snatching third overall, edging out Hamilton by a mere five thousandths of a second.

Technical gremlins caught out several teams early on. Isack Hadjar suffered a suspected power unit issue that sent him down the Turn 4 escape road, while Freddie Slater faced frustrating delays when a cooling fan was accidentally left inside his Audi.

As the session entered its closing phase, teams transitioned to soft-tyre qualifying simulations. Leclerc cemented his dominance at the top of the timesheets, comfortably leading Antonelli and a late-charging Vesti as the session drew to a close.
