The Formula 1 summer break is usually a flurry of driver announcements and contract renewals. But this year, it's been eerily quiet—barring an unexpected team principal change at Cadillac and a fairly predictable contract extension for Alex Albon. With more than half of the 2027 grid still unconfirmed, many expected chaos. Instead, stability seems to be the theme.
Twelve seats officially remain up for grabs, yet the paddock is calm. But beneath the surface, the biggest dominoes are yet to fall.
Verstappen and Alonso: The Two Key Dominoes
All eyes are on Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, the two biggest names yet to decide their futures. Their choices will send shockwaves through the entire grid.

Verstappen's future has dominated headlines for months. The 28-year-old Dutchman is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, but a performance-related clause could let him leave early. His management has reportedly talked with McLaren, but the Woking squad is content with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, both locked in until 2027 and 2028. With Mercedes and Ferrari also settled for 2027, staying at Red Bull appears the most realistic option. Still, a sabbatical can't be ruled out.

Alonso, meanwhile, has said he'll use the break to decide whether to continue. The two-time champion insists his decision won't be based solely on Aston Martin's competitiveness, but the team's recent upgrade in Hungary offers hope. Aston Martin wants to keep him alongside Lance Stroll, and the paddock expects clarity when Alonso faces the media at Zandvoort this Thursday.
Midfield Stability, Pressure at Haas
Many teams are waiting for Verstappen and Alonso before making moves. At Williams, James Vowles has convinced Carlos Sainz and Albon to stay for 2027. Franco Colapinto looks set to keep his Alpine seat, and Audi is expected to retain Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto.
Racing Bulls will likely keep Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson, though Nikola Tsolov's F2 title charge could force a change. The most probable shake-up is at Haas, where Esteban Ocon is under pressure after being outperformed by teammate Ollie Bearman. Candidates like Leonardo Fornaroli, Ryo Hirakawa, Yuki Tsunoda, or Rafael Camara could replace him.

At Cadillac, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas appear safe with multi-year deals, but the shock sacking of founding principal Graeme Lowdon for Marcin Budkowski leaves question marks. One thing is certain: Zandvoort will bring answers, and the silly season is far from over.
