Extreme Sepang Heat Triggers Dizziness and Forces Joan Mir Into Early Retirement

Joan Mir's much-anticipated return to competitive action ended in frustration after the 2020 world champion was forced to park his machine in the pit lane ahead of distance. The lingering health issues that previously sidelined the Spaniard for four consecutive rounds reared their head once again under the punishing Malaysian sun.

The Sepang weekend marked the rider's first appearance back in the paddock following vision and fatigue complications, but Sunday's race proved to be an entirely different beast. With ambient temperatures soaring to a brutal 35 degrees Celsius, the physical toll on the Honda star quickly escalated as the race progressed.

Despite navigating the opening two days of practice without major setbacks, the intensity of a full Grand Prix grid battle pushed his body past its current threshold. Around lap nine, the Mallorcan experienced sudden dizziness that compromised his focus and bike control, leading to the difficult choice to retire.

"We already knew with the doctors that if I was having some dizzy moments due to the heat and due to these difficult conditions, I would stop," Mir explained to reporters when reflecting on the safety-first decision made alongside his medical crew.

"I started to get a bit dizzy on lap nine. I was not having a little bit of control of the situation and I decided to stop. We will continue working and hopefully we sort the situation as soon as possible," he added, detailing the exact moment he realized continuing would be a risk.

Prior to Sunday's physical setback, the weekend had offered promising signs of progress following countless hours of preparation behind the scenes to regain his competitive rhythm and physical endurance.

"Honestly, I worked so much to try to be in a better situation. During all the weekend, I thought it was a positive weekend. But for me the question mark was the moment that the beats per minute goes up and that was in the race," he admitted candidly.

With the next round looming on the horizon, Mir could not offer immediate assurances regarding his participation as he continues to search for definitive medical answers regarding his stamina and recovery timeline.

"We still have some work to do, so I don't have more answers," he concluded when asked about his outlook for the upcoming events.
