Former world champion Joan Mir has finally shed light on the mysterious health condition that forced him to miss the last four rounds of the 2026 MotoGP world championship. The Spanish rider admitted that various performance issues and his alarming crash frequency earlier in the year now make complete sense in light of his recent medical struggles.
Mir's return to action at Sepang this weekend marks the end of a lengthy recovery period, a spell during which Honda was forced to race with just a single rider. Speaking in the media pen on Thursday, the 2020 world champion detailed the fatigue and vision problems that began plaguing him even before he officially stepped away from the paddock.
While his frequent crashes had previously drawn intense scrutiny from pundits and fans alike, Mir was quizzed on whether his underlying medical problem had been hindering him without his conscious awareness. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, completely," the Spaniard stated. "Now I have a lot of answers about things that happened."

Elaborating on the timeline of his symptoms, Mir explained how the issues progressively escalated in the weeks leading up to September's San Marino Grand Prix, which proved to be his final appearance before taking a mandatory break. "The most worrying things were the vision problems, and also the extreme fatigue, which I couldn’t control," he said. "Before Misano, I’d already been experiencing this for a while, but it was there that I started to lose control of it."
Mir was careful to emphasize that he was strictly describing his personal symptoms rather than delivering a clinical diagnosis. Reflecting on whether missing four races was somewhat softened by Honda's ongoing competitive struggles, he admitted that watching from the sidelines was painful, particularly at Motegi, but concluded that racing while physically unprepared would have been entirely counterproductive.
