The opening practice session of the Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix delivered a rare spectacle as nearly half the grid was handed over to rookie drivers. Ten constructors opted to bench their regular line-ups to grant valuable track time to young prospects, whereas Ferrari kept their faith in seasoned regulars Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The shake-up across the pitlane was immediately apparent from the outset. At Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen watched from the garage while Japanese hopeful Ayumu Iwasa took over his cockpit. Mercedes sidelined George Russell to hand Frederik Vesti practice duties, and reigning powerhouse McLaren fielded Italian youngster Leonardo Fornaroli in place of Lando Norris.

The wave of FP1 stand-ins extended deep down the pitlane. Gabriele Mini stepped in for Franco Colapinto at Alpine, Nikola Tsolov piloted the Racing Bulls machine normally driven by Liam Lawson, and Ryo Hirakawa took the wheel at Haas instead of Esteban Ocon. Further debut action featured Jak Crawford with Aston Martin, Luke Browning for Williams, Freddie Slater in the Audi garage, and Colton Herta representing Cadillac.

On-track running commenced under pleasant weather conditions, featuring a moderate ambient temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a track temperature soaring to 43 degrees. This provided a much-needed relief for the paddock following days of torrential downpours that had severely flooded large parts of Mexico City and caused severe traffic gridlock earlier in the week.

Amidst the rookie evaluations, several teams capitalized on the session to test high-altitude aerodynamic updates. McLaren, Ferrari, Racing Bulls, and Red Bull Racing equipped their cars with enlarged engine cover louvers to combat the cooling challenges of Mexico City's thin air, alongside targeted diffuser and brake duct tweaks implemented by Red Bull and Audi.
