Charles Leclerc was involved in a massive crash on lap two of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, bringing the race to a temporary halt under red flag conditions. The incident unfolded while the Ferrari driver was battling Oscar Piastri of McLaren for fourth place.
As he attempted to correct his car at the final corner, Leclerc lost control and swung in the opposite direction, skating through the gravel before hitting the barrier heavily. Despite the severity of the impact, the Monegasque was able to climb out of his car unassisted and walk to the medical car.
The red flag was deployed to repair the damaged barrier and remove the Ferrari. The incident came just moments after a heated exchange between Leclerc and his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, at Turn 1. Hamilton complained that Leclerc had pushed him wide while racing wheel-to-wheel, causing him to drop to eighth place.
This crash is a major blow for Ferrari on home soil, especially as Leclerc had been showing competitive pace. Before the incident, he was engaged in a tight duel with Piastri for a top-four finish, raising hopes among the tifosi. Those hopes were shattered in an instant.
Following the red flag, the race is expected to resume with a restart procedure. However, Leclerc will play no further part, leaving Ferrari with just one car to fight for points. Hamilton, meanwhile, faces an uphill battle from further down the order to salvage a respectable result in front of the passionate home crowd.
