Charles Leclerc missed out on pole position in Mexico City

The qualifying session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez left a bitter taste of regret for Charles Leclerc. The Scuderia Ferrari stalwart failed to secure the premier starting slot after being outpaced by his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, who executed a stellar lap to snatch pole position. Ironically, the Monegasque driver had dominated the opening practice sessions, establishing strong early momentum.

Disappointment was evident as the qualifying specialist settled for third place behind George Russell. Speaking to media outlets including Motorsport Week after the session, he openly shouldered the blame for failing to deliver when it mattered most. Tire preparation and inconsistent out-laps were cited as the primary hurdles that dismantled his rhythm during the dying moments of Q3.

"Yes, tyre preparation is quite key. I kind of struggled to have the same conditions for my out-lap throughout the qualifying. But at the end of the day, when I had a clean out-lap in Q3, run two, I didn't do the job. So I can only be angry with myself," Leclerc confessed to reporters in the paddock.

Despite his initial frustration regarding his grid position, the Ferrari ace remained hopeful about his race-day prospects. Drawing confidence from his recent charge in Austin where he rapidly surged forward from fourth place, he believes the SF-26 possesses the underlying race pace needed to mount a serious challenge.

"I think the pace is good. I think the car feels good and has felt good since FP1. So I think on that we've got the race pace, but I doubt there will be any overtakes tomorrow. I've tried more in FP2, and it's just very difficult because the overtake mode doesn't do much," he explained regarding the aerodynamic challenges posed by Mexico's high altitude.

Attention has now shifted entirely to the chaotic opening corners of the lap. Leclerc noted that the hierarchy established by Turn 3 will likely dictate the remainder of the afternoon, emphasizing the extreme difficulty of executing overtaking maneuvers on the venue's long straights and tight technical sections. Keeping his composure and navigating the first-lap skirmishes safely will dictate his path forward.
