The dominance of the Chevrolet Camaro in Supercars practice at The Bend immediately raised a big question: is the controversial parity change really the key? But leading drivers refused to jump to conclusions. The Camaro, which received a revised front undertray tunnel following successful lobbying by General Motors, indeed looked impressive. Jayden Ojeda topped two of the three sessions, while Bayley Hall was fastest in the co-driver only session. In the final and fastest session, Ojeda led Anton De Pasquale at the top, with David Reynolds and Hall also inside the top 10.
Parity Change and Driver Skepticism
Despite the encouraging practice results, drivers were reluctant to directly link performance with the parity change. This is the third in-season aero change for the Camaro, and unsurprisingly, the topic is sensitive. De Pasquale stressed that practice is not the right indicator. "It's hard to tell," he said. "I think today is not the best indication, there are a lot of guys that have a bit more to give. We'll see tomorrow, when everyone has a few cracks at it in qualifying, where we stand. And more so in the race which is where you see these things more over the distance and tyre life and behind cars and all this stuff. We'll know a bit more on Sunday night."
Ojeda agreed that the differences are too small to feel in isolation. "Honestly, you'd have to be pretty incredible to feel the difference, especially circuit to circuit," he said. "I think the big difference will come in the racing, that's where our biggest deficit has been. Anton has shown you can qualify well, and some circuits even race well. I think the race will be where the conversation starts, I think. Anything now is pointless."
Paddock Tension and Legal Threats
The Camaro change has prompted tension in the paddock. Top Ford teams Triple Eight and Grove Racing reportedly met with Supercars at The Bend this evening to seek clarification on the decision, amid threats of potential legal action. This situation adds another layer of drama ahead of the race weekend.
With promising practice results for the Camaro camp, but drivers holding back from claiming an advantage, this weekend's race will be the true test. Will the parity change really make a significant difference, or is it just an illusion from practice? The answer will be revealed on track, and perhaps also in the paddock meeting room.
