Patrick Cameron is set to make his Mustang Cup Australia debut at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend, joining his brother Josh on the grid. The younger Cameron will pilot the #96 Ford Mustang Dark Horse R, the same car that Aaron Cameron drove to the category's first-ever victory at Phillip Island.
After testing the car at the venue in recent weeks, Patrick is eager to get his first taste of racing in the category. "I hadn't driven the car nor been to the track before, so I'll be easing in and just trying to make sure I get through my first round," he said. "I'm excited to learn the intricacies of the category and see how we go moving forward into a full-season program next year."
The step up from Excels to Mustang Cup is significant, but Patrick has found the Dark Horse R to be a friendly beast. "It's a massive change, but the Dark Horse R was really nice in putting down its power, making it predictable to drive. This allowed me to focus on other areas such as getting used to the Michelin slick tyre and the weight of the package."
Josh, who sits fourth in the standings with two podiums, has been instrumental in putting the deal together. "The plan behind the scenes was always for Patrick to be in a Dark Horse R within the next 18 months," said Josh Cameron. "At each round, Patrick has been sitting on the debriefs and learning what the processes are because it's a big jump for him from Excels to Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia."
Racing against a sibling brings a unique dynamic. "We've raced together previously and the number one rule is to never hit your teammate, but this may have been broken a few times in Excels," Josh admitted with a smile. "Unfortunately, it was me every time hitting him, not the other way around. It's cool competing against your brother, we've been doing through all of our sport from swimming to motorsport."
Both brothers are confident that RM Race Cars is the right team for their campaign. "We highlighted very early that if we were going to this category, RM Race Cars was the team we'd be doing it with and the proof is in the pudding," Josh added. The team, owned by Ryan McLeod, has been a strong supporter of Josh's efforts since Phillip Island.
For Patrick, the Sydney round is a learning experience that will set the foundation for a full-season program next year. With #95 and #96 on the grid, the brotherly battle is sure to be a highlight of the weekend.
