Big Alpine Upgrade: Will It Swing Key F1 Fight?

The battle in the Formula 1 midfield is often more intense than the fight at the front. While the top four teams get most of the attention, the close competition between Racing Bulls and Alpine for fifth in the constructors' championship is heating up. The problem is they are fighting for minor points, so a bad weekend can be very costly.

Alpine arrived at Zandvoort with an upgrade package that was expected to bring two to three tenths of a second in performance. Pierre Gasly was the lucky one to get the new parts, while teammate Franco Colapinto stayed with the old spec. It was a sprint weekend, so there was limited time to optimize the upgrade.

Comparing Gasly and Colapinto throughout the weekend, the gap between them narrowed as sessions progressed. In qualifying, Colapinto was only about two tenths behind, matching the team's initial prediction. However, the team would have hoped for more, as this was classified as a substantial upgrade.

What did Alpine change? From the front wing, there are no big differences visible. Maybe it was updated earlier in the season, and the rest of the developments are focused on optimizing the airflow further rearward. However, one interesting detail is the neat integration of the upper horizontal vane and the outwash vane into the endplate surface. Integration like this, as opposed to separate components bonded on, is always a plus.

The most significant change is in the sidepod profile. The bulbous rear section has been removed, resulting in a slimmer shape that aligns with other teams' concepts. This allows better airflow to the area between the bodywork and rear tyre, improving diffuser performance. To support this change, the cooling system inside the sidepod has also been revised.

The radiator intake is now positioned higher with a larger undercut, giving a sleeker sidepod shape and slightly wider. The intake area is also slightly smaller, following the classic aero compromise: airflow used for cooling is wasted for downforce. These decisions always require careful balance.

The impact of this upgrade will be clear in the upcoming races. Can Alpine hold off Racing Bulls in the fight for fifth? Only time will tell, but this step shows their seriousness in the tight midfield battle.
